Anyone can refer a client to Meals on Wheels including family members, friends, a Hospital, GP, Rehab Facility, Community Nurse, Dietitian, Law Enforcement Agency, etc. You can even refer yourself. There are no waiting lists, no means testing and absolutely no contracts.
When making the referral it’s good to note if the client has any hazards in the home (Eg: a dog or broken step) or if the clients home requires special access instruction (Eg: a secure gated community) or anything else that may affect the volunteer or the delivery of the meal. This allows the Meals on Wheels service coordinator to ensure the volunteer takes care and accesses the home safely during the delivery.
Once a client has been referred, a coordinator from their local Meals on Wheels service contacts them to discuss any special requirements and delivery of meals. Special diets are arranged as required.
